Stepping up NDR and DNS filtering on ExchangeDefender

Due to the enormous amount of feedback by our customer base we are stepping up the defense from NDRs received for the emails that were not originated by your users to begin with. This is often called NDR blowback, backscatter, fake virus or worm storm, etc. It happens when someone uses your email address to relay an enormous amount of SPAM to the remote servers and encounters a lot of dead mailboxes that may have already been removed or had their quotas filled with SPAM. Naturally, an error bounces back to you because the remote server thinks you sent it.

We have had NDR backscatter protection for quite some time but the cries from our customer base have forced us to take away our liberal stance on this issue. We are now strictly enforcing NDR legitimacy, meaning that we will only deliver NDR mail if the message was sent through one of our outbound servers. Anything else, because we cannot validate it, will be automatically thrown into the SPAM queue if you choose to quarantine SPAM messages.

Changes within this build include:

NEW: Improved detection of image spam by the GFI MailEssentials Bayesian filter (Anti-spam -> Bayesian Analysis).
NEW: Botnet/Zombie Check added to the DNS Blacklists feature (Anti-spam -> DNS Blacklists). This check blocks emails from dynamic IPs as listed on sorbs.net, increasing detection rates for image spam generated by botnets.
FIXED: When GFI MailEssentials is installed to a directory whose path contains a dot, for example "C:\Program Files\GFI\Mail.Essentials", the Anti-spam Synchronization Agent will fail to upload the anti-spam files.
FIXED: When GFI MailEssentials is installed on a server whose name contains an underscore, for example "machine_one.domain.com", the Anti-spam Synchronization Agent will fail to merge the anti-spam files.
FIXED: The GFI MailEssentials Configuration and Anti-spam Synchronization Agent Configuration MMC user interface consoles now accept server names containing an underscore, such as "machine_one.domain.com", as valid.
FIXED: When GFI MailEssentials is installed on a cluster environment, the Anti-spam Synchronization Agent treats the clustered machines as separate machines on the network.
FIXED: The GFI MailEssentials Reporter fails to generate User Usage Statistics Reports (Inbound/Outbound/Composite) and Domain Usage Statistics Reports. This issue manifested itself only if the backend reporting database is a Microsoft SQL Server database and the total size of emails received or sent by an individual user or domain is more than 2147483648 bytes for the particular date range selected.
FIXED: Non Delivery Reports were not being generated when the "Generate Non Delivery Report (NDR)" anti-spam option was being enabled on a German installation of GFI MailEssentials.

Changes within this build include:

FIXED: When installing on a cluster, Exchange wasn't being detected and therefore VS API support wasn't being installed.
FIXED: On Windows 2000 reboot the Email Exploit Engine might fail to initialize causing all email flow to go to failedmails.
FIXED: The attachment checking was identifying certain mp3s as text.
FIXED: Email loop condition that can occur between GFI MailEssentials and the GFI MailSecurity quarantine when both products are installed on the same machine.
FIXED: In some cases the Exchange user counting was failing.
FIXED: A file of size 0 bytes when caught by attachment rule will not be downloaded from the Quarantine Store.
FIXED: Various user interface validation fixes.
FIXED: The issue where sometimes, when a virus engine fails to update and reload causes emails to go to failedmails.
FIXED: If during processing the Scan Engine service is restarted, some emails might end up in the failedmails.

MSAntispyware / Symantec False Positive

14/02/2006

This alert is to notify you that Microsoft and Symantec are aware of an issue currently affecting customers using both Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware Beta 1 and versions of Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) Corporate Edition and Symantec Client Security (SCS). The issue involves a Windows AntiSpyware Beta 1 signature (5805) released at 11:30pm on Thursday, February 9th which incorrectly identified a registry key affecting these Symantec products as belonging to a password stealing malware known as PWS.Bancos.A.

Customers running Symantec's consumer products, Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security, are not impacted by this issue. This issue also does not affect customers using Symantec's software alongside Microsoft Windows Defender Beta 2 either in Windows XP or preview versions of Windows Vista.

MyWife Malware

This alert is to notify you of the release of Microsoft Security Advisory (904420).

Microsoft wants to make customers aware of the Mywife mass mailing malware variant named Win32/Mywife.E@mm. The mass mailing malware tries to entice users through social engineering efforts into opening an attached file in an e-mail message. If the recipient opens the file, the malware sends itself to all the contacts that are contained in the system's address book. The malware may also spread over writeable network shares on systems that have blank administrator passwords.

Customers who are using the most recent and updated antivirus software could be at a reduced risk of infection from the Win32/Mywife.E@mm malware. Customers should verify this with their antivirus vendor.

Antivirus vendors have assigned different names to this malware but the Common Malware Enumeration (CME) group has assigned it ID CME-24.

November Microsoft Patches....

Microsoft has released November’s security patches. Admins should visit this page and regular users this page to keep you protected.

Many of our clients are now upgraded to use Windows Software Update Server and have requested that critical patches are automatically approved for the client machines. Those sites would have already had notification of the new updates.

For sites that are not running WSUS, the best recommendation is a visit to the new Microsoft Update site.

Exchange Service Pack 2 Released - Mailbox Store can now be 75GB!

Alert: Exploits for Plug and Play Vulnerability Released

"Today, several instances of exploit code targeting the vulnerability discussed in MS05-039 were released to the world. The eEye Research Team, upon discovering two instances of exploit code online, conducted thorough testing to confirm that both present a legitimate threat to Windows 2000 systems (completely patched SP 4 with all hotfixes). One exploit, released by an anonymous author, will bind a command prompt to TCP port 8721."

Microsoft introduce Windows Validation

Microsoft is no longer providing updates to non-genuine versions of its Windows XP operating system. From today, the company has switched over to a full launch of its Windows Genuine Advantage Programme as part of its ongoing anti-piracy campaign.

Users will now have to join the WGA authentication program if they want to receive software updates from the Microsoft Download Centre or from Windows Update. However, MS says it will still provide security patches for pirated systems, which will be available via Automatic Updates in Windows.

eEye Statement regarding Microsoft RDP DoS Information

Last week Microsoft released a security alert that warned of a remote Denial of Service (DoS) condition in the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). RDP is disabled by default on most Windows versions, with the exception of Media Center. However, many organizations do enable it to aid in remote support.

Microsoft have published a case study about the Chambers of Commerce and NTES working together to roll out a Small Business Server 2003 solution.
